I have to admit that I’m really picky about what I use on my skin. Call it age if you will, I like to say it’s because of my work!
As a beauty journalist I’m prepared to give most things a go – but one of my absolute favourite skincare brands has got to be Tatcha, most importantly because the products feel so pure and perfect on my skin and they are packed with the most wonderful time-tested ingredients.
A little background: Tatcha was founded by Vicky Tsai, a Japanese American long fascinated by the ways of the geisha. After hearing of the Edo-period book called Miyakofuzokukewaiden (or roughly capital? Beauty and Style handbook) Vicky set out to recreate these timeless beauty secrets, recognised as the oldest in Japan, for the modern day woman. With so many powerful ingredients to choose form Vicky focused on a trio of antioxidant champions: ryokucha (green tea), Okinawa kaiso (red algae) and komenuka (rice bran) – not to ignore the long time geisha favourite – camellia oil. So Tatcha was born.
Vicky was in Hong Kong recently to christen the latest addition to the Tatcha family – Gold Camellia Beauty Oil. The benefits of Camellia were first discovered thousands of years ago by Japan’s Oshima Island Girls (or Anko) who harvested the winter bloom for its luxurious oil. These girls knew a thing or two about beauty as you can see from the photo. Even today modern-day geisha are renowned for using the oil to hydrate and protect their skin, hair and even their fingernails.
The new Camellia rich oil is packed with skin protecting antioxidants and other nourishing essentials like squalene, rice and macadamia nut oils. And with added flecks of 24-karat gold, once again Tatcha has elevated the everyday to the exquisite.
