It isn’t rocket science, but following my enlightening stay at Fivelements in Bali earlier this month, it is clear that this year must focus on slowing down, doing everything more mindfully and keeping wellness as the foundation for all that I do. As I see it, it’s all about being kind…
Being kind to my world – on a macro scale by buying less, reusing, recycling and repairing more and being more careful of how I use resources, on a community level by becoming involved in the things which matter to my communities, both geographical and digital, and on a micro scale by gradually culling the clutter in my flat, and welcoming new space in, in which to be creative, comfortable and content.
Being kind to others – by being more generous with my time and energy on their behalf, by practicing random acts of kindness on friends and strangers for no return, and being better at keeping in touch with friends and family overseas.
And being kind to myself – by living more mindfully and measuredly. I will try to use wellness as the foundation by which I live, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Physically I must focus on looking after myself, with wellness at the core of what I eat and drink, and my fitness and general wellbeing.
Mentally wellness should be present in my approach to my work, to ensure it is an exciting, fascinating and joyful challenge rather than a necessary or stressful chore.
Emotionally I must remember that I am responsible for my happiness, and allow my relationships the emotional space and freedom to find their own happiness and give back to me similarly.
And spiritually I want to spend more time nurturing my spiritual strength, by spending quality time in nature, in meditation, in conscious reflection and in stillness.
As I contemplate the dawn of a new year 8,760 hours (or thereabouts if my maths serves me well) have passed since the birth of 2103 – a year that I knew would mean a lot of change for me……
And it did. A massive move from East to West for my family and I was undoubtedly the highlight. Now the move is done, we are settling into our adventurous new life and I am seeking a little internal calm.
For 2014 mindfulness is top of my agenda and I will soon embark on an intensive course on the subject.
Hardly surprising that about 70% of the diseases we suffer from are caused by our lifestyle choices. Are you willing to settle for that? I for one am not.
My resolution – learning to be still, to be in the moment and to appreciate life for what it is.
Sounds easy I know. Try it and see for yourself.
